Relactation story to share........

Re-lactation – Rachel’s story

When my son was almost 4 weeks old, I began my relactation journey. I stocked up on medication, supplements, information and support. You see, he was formula fed at one week old. I was hospitalised overnight with severe anxiety attacks and extreme insomnia when he was 6 days old and was not in a state to breastfeed so he was given formula feeds.

I then allowed my milk to dry up as I focused on getting better mentally. After finding out that I had lost my first pregnancy early in the second trimester, I understandably was anxious during my second pregnancy and beyond. As a result, I had postnatal depression & anxiety all surrounding the fear of losing my son and not being a ‘good enough’ Mumma to him.

I so desperately missed breastfeeding – not only for all of the health benefits to him and myself but because I loved it.

I started being very conscious of eating well, drinking loads of fluids, resting, and nursing him as often as possible. He would latch on but got increasingly frustrated because I was producing next-to-no milk. I was taking several galactologues and started pumping regularly. I stayed in contact with a lactation consultant and ordered a Supplementary Nursing System. A generous Mum donated expressed breastmilk to us as well.

To say I was determined is an understatement.

I was so blessed to have a cooperative baby and an extremely supportive husband. I went from expressing literally a couple of mLs from both breasts at a time to producing more than enough breastmilk (750 mL in a 24 hour period) in just seventeen days!

Getting my supply back was only half the battle. It was then a matter of getting him back to the breast. 11 days later, after much frustration and a few meltdowns (from both him and I) my baby boy had his first of many feeds from the breast… and we haven’t looked back…

That was almost 10 months ago (my bub is almost one!) and my ‘boobah’ loving baby boy is healthy, happy and thriving!

It was trying, don’t get me wrong. I had to hand express at first and expressing so regularly and constantly was draining both physically and emotionally. I had all the normal duties of a first time Mum to contend with alongside postnatal anxiety, an exhaustive pumping schedule, painful nipples (hello nipple thrush, meet hospital grade double breast pump), the financial cost and it was so time consuming. But it was beyond worth it.

I spent time researching relactation on the internet. I searched for success stories, blogs, articles, anything that would tell me that it was not only possible but that it was worth it (you can find my relactation blog at http://relactater.blogspot.com and my motherhood blog at http://racheous.wordpress.com).

At one point I remember saying I just want someone to come to me from the future and tell me that this will all be worth it. Well, it is. It really really is.

I didn’t just want to breast-feed. I wanted to breast-nurture. I am a relactation success story. I just want to be a voice for relactation to say that it is achievable and gaining back our breastfeeding relationship has been so very rewarding.

Nasihat Luqman Al-Hakim Pada Anaknya

Utk dikongsi bersama.......dapat menerusi emel rasmi pagi tadi......

Hai anakku!

Tarikh kejadian: 8 Oktober 2011
Masa kejadian: 6-11pm
Lokasi kejadian: Di sebuah kediaman kawasan Butterworth
Acara kemuncak: BBQ time!

Sabtu lepas, telah berlangsung dengan jayanya acara perjumpaan keluarga para muallaf di Butterworth (aiseh tetiba ayat aku macam karangan budak sekolah.....rindu nak buat esei SPM laaaa tu ! muahahahahha).

Takder laaa, sebenarnya dah lama si hubby plan nak ajak kawan-kawan dia mai rumah, kenal-kenal, almaklumlaaa kami kan baru pindah (tak laaa baru sangat, awal tahun hari tu).....tapi disebabkan time tu aku tgh pregnant, pastu 3 bulan cuti bersalin, pastu puasa, pastu raya, tu yg baru Sabtu lepas boleh 'on' program ni........

Kami takder laaa buat besar mana pon, org kata 'secara kecil-kecilan' ajer....maklum aku sorang yg nak handle ni, takdak sapa mai tolong! (waaaaaa......hukhukhuhkuhk)....

So plan punyer plan, menu utama kami, 'Char Koay Teow' yg sgt glamer kt kawasan tuh. Pi order ajer...hehheheh....kang kalau aku masak, ada pulak yg terbazir nanti........

Pastu kami buat BBQ ayam n sosej.....sosej tu tambahan laaa, sebab aku pikirkan budak-budak.....(mak pak budak pun suka sosej tuh!)

Lain-lain, sate (order juga) dan pasta salad.....pasta salad ni aku buat.....siap cari resepi kt internet.....yahooo berjaya buat....org puji sedap....alhamdulillah.....yippiey!

Berapa ya jumlah kehadiran jemputan? Semua yg dijemput hadir....terima kasih......

Antaranya: Bro Ashraf Tan & family, Bro Daniel Lee & family, Bro Naufal Tan & wife, Bro Kamarudin Leong & family, Bro Yunos, Bro Husni & family, Wani Amanullah, dll (yg aku tak mention nama, maksudnya aku 1st time jumpa depa malam tu, so tak berapa nak ingat).......

Jemputan khas yg tidak dapat hadir: CikAwin & Anas ..... (hukhukhukhuk...sedih, sebab benih ulam raja tak sampai-sampai.......ahaks) sori cikawin, we really miss u !

Tapi kan , disebabkan kesibukan melayan tetamu dan ulang-alik dari dapur ke ruang depan, aku tak sempat snap gambar event ni...huuhuhuh.....sedih tau!....

Pasta salad, sate, kuey teow, tak sempat nak snap..... (esp pasta salah laaaa, pasai buat sendiri kan......huhuhuhu).....

Ajwad, Amzar, Astro Oasis & Baby TV

Ajwad ni, dari dulu si Daddy cuba perkenalkan kartun kat dia, higgakan ah kong ah ma ah chor (atuk, nenek dan moyang: belah hubby) dia pon sibuk pujuk dia tgk kartun, tapi tak berjaya....takder nyer Ajwad tu minat nak tgk spongebob ker, ultraman ker, upin-ipin ker, doraemon ker dan lain2 yang sewaktu dengannya....

Ajwad sejak kecil lebih suka tgk Astro OASIS ! Even kalau pergi rumah tuk nenek belah hubby pon, dia mintak bukak saluran Oasis tu ! hahahahahhahahah... Dia cakap: "Ajwad nak tgk Allahuakbar" (dia panggil saluran oasis sebagai allahuakbar.)....so tak kisah laaa time tu oasis sedang tayang rancangan apa, janji bukak oasis! Tapi dia paling suka time slot Indahnya Iman (sementara tunggu azan).

Tup-tup, sekarang Ajwad dah jatuh cinta dgn Baby TV....memang kalau bukak TV tu, dia akan mintak pasang babyTV laaa....

Tapi aku rasa lagi ok dia minat dgn babytv berbanding kartun-kartun lain kan (yg kdg-kdg tu ntah apa-apa ntah)...baby tv ni fokus pada education cartoon n nursery rhymes.....so sesuai sgt laaa utk 2 beradik ni....

Ada satu part tu nursery rhymes berbunyi camni:

"Its today my special day.....its today my special day..."

Ajwad pulak nyanyi camni: " It today ma ta today ......"

Aku dengar tu nak gelak pun ada....tapi takder laaa tunjuk depan dia kan....kang kecik hati lak Ajwad (pandai ke kecik hati...hehehhehe)

So, bila dengar jer dia nyanyi camtu utk setiap kali, aku pun puji laa dia....

"Pandai laaa Ajwad ni......" Terus tersenyum riang dia....hehhehee

Sambil-sambil tu aku ajar dia pronouns betul-betul SPECIAL tu.....mungkin susah lagi bagi dia kot......

Itu kisah si abang....ni kisah adiknya pulak.....

Amzar ni, kalau kenyang, letak jer depan BabyTV, fuh....memang fokus betul laaa tgk....cam kita2 jer tgk tv....cam reti-reti jer.....

Sekarang lagi pandai....kalau nk menyusu tu, tak boleh dah depan tv...kene tutup tv sekejap/slow volume atau bawak p menyusu tempat lain....kalau tak, kepala dia tu asyik nak pandang tv ajer.....amboi....tahu ler BabyTV tu penuh ceria and colorful.........

Hmm.....anok oh anok!

Petua Drp Doktor .... Bengkak Susu

Aku rasa laa kan, mana-mana ibu yg menyusu akan mengalami masalah bengkak susu (engorgement). Hinggakan ada sesetengah ibu demam akibat kesakitan melampau....

Aku pun tidak terkecuali....aduiiii.....sakitnya yg amat....cuma aku tidak laaa sampai demam. Alhamdulillah.

Aku kena selepas habis tempoh berpantang, time tu dah balik ke rumah sendiri. Tak tahu mana punca, tiba-tiba bengkak susu, bersekali dengan blocked duct (rasanya laaa sebab susu tak mau keluar bila pam/picit). 2 hari pertama, degil tak mau pi klinik lagi. Nak try cara tradisional dulu....guna sikat, guna kobis....tak jalan....bagi baby hisap (sakitnya hingga meraung-raung meleleh air mataku...hukhukhuk......), tetap tak jadi jugak....

Last-last, surrender.....terpaksa pi klinik gak....nasib baik masih dlm cuti bersalin lagi.....

Jumpa doktor, cerita semua-semua....tup2 doktor bagi petua:

"Buat kopi/nescafe dalam bentuk paste, pastu tampal kt tempat bengkak kecuali nipple...."

Katanya dia guna petua tu time dia breastfed dulu-dulu....

Aku takder try dah...dapat ubat klinik....alhamdulillah terus lega.....

Doktor bagi papain utk kurangkan bengkak (chewable, sedap ubat ni), ubat tahan sakit dan antibiotik.

Petang tu, lepas makan ubat, dapat breastfed baby tanpa perlu meraung-raung dah....hehehehe

Tips from books......

Healthy tips # 1: Reducing fat

Tunggu beberapa minit....insyaAllah masak laaa telur 'goreng' tu.....

 Till then, happy trying ya!

Three Makeup Dangers You Need to Avoid

Copy paste drp http://www.doctoroz.com/videos/three-makeup-dangers-you-need-avoid

Tips yg sesuai dicuba oleh mereka yg suka cosmetic trial ni.....

The last thing you want to do when you’re trying to look beautiful and healthy is get sick or damage your looks. Dr. Oz goes inside your medicine cabinets, purses and makeup kits to reveal the hidden dangers you need to avoid.

Every day we use a dozen or more products in the pursuit of beauty (or, let’s face it, just trying to look like we got more sleep than we did). In fact our pursuit of looking well rested, beautiful, or younger is a $30 billion dollar industry. But there are dangers lurking on the road to looking good. Here’s your road map to 3 biggies to avoid.

Risk #1: The Bacteria Buffet at the Makeup Counter
Few things are as glamorous as the gleaming cosmetics section in a big department store, packed with fresh-faced clerks in chic, tidy outfits. But, don’t be fooled by appearances. The tubes, containers, and bottles they are beckoning you to sample are filled with the bacteria of the shoppers who came before you. Those shiny testers are touched by hundreds of women who may harbor pink eye, herpes, a cold or flu, or simply hands that weren’t washed after going to the bathroom.

What You Should Know
A 2-year study of germs at the makeup counter found that 100% of samples were contaminated with bacteria such as staphylococcus aureus, strep and E. Coli (yes, the poop germ).  And it didn’t matter if the store was on Fifth Avenue or Main Street.

What You Can Do
  • Employ single-use applicators for anything that will touch your eyes, nose or mouth. On lipsticks, swipe the swab or applicator on the side of the tube, not the top (which everyone else has been touching). With lip-gloss, squeeze a little out and discard, then use the applicator to apply.
  • Disinfect lipsticks, pencils, and brushes with spray alcohol (ask the clerk to use theirs or bring your own). Use a Kleenex to scrape the top layer off eye shadows, blushes, and powders and apply with a cotton ball.
  • Bring your own mascara if you’re getting a makeover at the counter.
  • Avoid sampling on the weekend, when the study found the highest levels of contamination. The lowest levels were on Thursday afternoon.
Risk #2: Eyelash Extending Products
Have you seen those products lining pharmacy shelves promising to actually help you grow longer lashes? Well, it’s all a bunch of hooey. No over-the-counter product can do what nature can’t. So, the biggest risk you’re taking with those is wasting a wallet-full of money. But there is one prescription product – Latisse – approved for hypotrichosis (not having eye lashes) that does actually work. An ophthalmologist who was using the drug for glaucoma patients noticed that one of the medicine’s side effects was growing thick lashes. It is believed to work by elongating the amount of time eyelashes can grow before they fall out.

What You Should Know
Growing thicker lashes is not the only side effect this medication has. It can also cause red eyes, bulging veins in the eye, blue black discoloration around the eye, and discoloration of the iris, burning and inflammation (none of which is particularly beautiful and can be dangerous).

What You Should Do
As with any drug, you discuss the benefits and side effects with a doctor you trust. And only use this product with a prescription from (and under the care of) your doctor. Do not purchase it online or in spas. Make sure your doctor monitors you while you take the medication.

Risk #3: Products that Lighten Your Skin
Lots of women are seeking a solution for dark spots on the skin, often caused by pregnancy, menopause, or acne scars and there are lots of products that claim to help, but they can cause more problems than they solve.

What You Should Know
There is a prescription medication that is very effective for evening complexion – hydroquinone, which stops the development of the melanin that creates dark spots on your skin. However, overusing hydroquinone or using unregulated products with it can cause you to develop blue skin, and doctors are reporting that more and more patients are coming to them with skin discoloration from hydroquinone.

Topical steroids such as clobetasol, are also often purported to help even skin tone, but they have very serious side effects including developing extremely thin skin, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and immune problems.

What You Can Do
  • Read the label. Anything that contains more than 2% hydroquinone should be prescribed by a doctor and used only with his or her supervision.
  • Beware of bootleg products, which can contain unsafe amounts of hydroquinone or harmful chemicals such as mercury and arsenic. Warning signs include suspiciously inexpensive products or those that do not list ingredients on the label.
The Promise of Laser Treatments
Laser treatments are a safe and effective way to treat uneven skin tone when performed by a board-certified doctor with experience using them and experience with your particular skin tone and complexion.
Till then, happy reading!
